Can you get energy-efficient spotlights?
How to find eco-friendly spotlights
We're renovating our house and are struggling to find energy-saving spotlights. Any tips? For table, floor and standard ceiling lamps, you can use energy-saving light bulbs, which have improved greatly in recent years - but for spotlights and incandescent lights, it's a little more difficult to find eco-friendly solutions. Halogen does use quite a lot of energy but new LED (light-emitting diode) lights that use lots of small bulbs to create a bright effect are becoming available. LED light bulbs last a very long time - typically over 50,000 hours (six times longer than standard light bulbs). Plus, they are more energy-efficient than standard halogen bulbs. Hilary Ritchie from LED Lightbulbs says: "You can buy LED bulbs for halogen light fittings, but in general the maximum power is 20W - great for secondary lighting, but not so suitable for main lighting. We expect high-power direct replacement bulbs to be available within the next year - so, if you install standard halogen lights now (using the common MR16 fitment), you'll be able to replace the bulbs with energy-efficient LED versions in the near future."
