Discover the secret of no-fail decorating

Four schemes with simple rules to ensure you’ll never go wrong

Decorating with bold print curtains

Let bold red and white print curtains make a glamorous impact by framing them with plain white walls, woodwork and furniture. Finish with bold accessories, but keep other patterns to a minimum.

Decorator's tip: Go for oversized accessories

Using large accessories is an easy way to add impact and make a statement. There's a knack to getting it right, though - simply follow our stylist's dos and dont's.

Choose simple pieces You want the overall effect to have impact, not to overwhelm, so go for streamlined objects with little or no decoration.

Get a balance Oversized accessories work best in symmetrical pairs. Try a big lamp at each end of a sideboard, or on side tables framing a sofa. Giant candlesticks at either end of a mantelshelf, a huge vase in each chimney-breast alcove, or big cushions at each end of the sofa also look effective.

Don't overdo it Your use of oversized accessories must be in proportion with your room – stuff it with big pieces and it’ll feel claustrophobic, not stylish. One pair of items is enough for a small room.

Declutter the backdrop Put big items against a simple painted wall and clear the area so they can really stand out. Any items nearby should be smaller and in the same colour, or clear glass.
