How to choose artwork

Our insiders' guide to buying artwork gives you advice from the experts on how to create a unique look.

Galleries

Walking into an empty gallery can be nerve-racking, but remember they're the retail outlet and you're the customer. Don't be afraid to ask for information and prices, then make an offer. Check out newexhibitions.com for gallery listings.

Top tips
1) Ask for the artist's statement, which explains their ideas and inspiration, so you understand what you're looking at.
2) Ask to join the mailing list so you receive invitations to private views, where you may meet the artist as well as gallery staff.
3) Find a gallery you like and build a relationship with them.
4) A red dot on a piece means it's sold and a half dot means it's reserved, but ask anyway. An artist may have similar work that isn't on display, or you could commission a piece.
5) Some galleries allow you to pay in instalments. Check exactly what's included in the cost: the frame, VAT, delivery etc.
6) Don't buy reproductions. They are really only high-quality posters.
