Green cooking

It's easier than you think to save time and energy while cooking in the kitchen. We asked the experts at Electrolux for their top tips...

1. Always cover the kettle or pan when cooking food
Not only is it faster, but it also uses less energy.

2. Cook at average temperature
If you have three dishes to be cooked in the oven at slightly different temperatures (325°, 350° and 375°, for example), pick the average temperature (350° in this example) to cook all three dishes.

3. Use pots and pans that fit the burners
Pans that fit a burner absorb more of the energy, reducing the amount of heat that is lost. Keep oven and burners clean. A clean oven uses energy more efficiently.

4. Don't peek
Every time you open the oven door to look at the food, the oven temperature is lowered by 20° to 40°. Use a timer if your oven door does not have a window.

5. Don't preheat the oven
Unless the food requires more than one hour of cooking time, it is unnecessary to preheat the oven.

6. Use as little liquid as possible when cooking your food
For example, you only need 1/8 to 1/4 of a litre of water to cook vegetables or potatoes.
