My lawn was luscious and green last summer but it has suffered dismally this winter and is showing no signs of recovery. Can you tell me what I need to do to bring it back to rude health?
Lawns lie dormant during the winter but if the weather has been particularly cold and wet and if your lawn has been badly trampled, some grass may die. Grass is generally quite tough, however, and often recovers as the warmer weather returns. I suggest you try cultivation techniques before resorting to chemical fertilisers. Scarify with a spring-tine rake to remove any thatch and to encourage the grass to grow. Aerate the whole area by pushing your garden fork in at least six inches deep - give the fork a wriggle to open up the holes and aid drainage. Next, top-dress, again for improved drainage and healthy growth. Sow grass seed on any thin or bare patches. If the ground is dry, water before scattering the seed and keep the soil moist after sowing. You may also need to protect the seed from birds - using netting, for example.
