How should I re-lay a brick floor?

We are renovating an old cottage that has wonderful floor bricks. They have to be lifted so we can lay a damp proof course but then I want to re-lay them with the same original, uneven irregular look. Can you advise what grout I should use?

The trick when laying old bricks is to follow the old method and just lay the bricks as they come to hand - half ones, broken, wide or narrow. Do not try to use a herringbone or mathematical pattern - it will not look authentic. Follow this method, laying the bricks as closely as you can until the floor looks right and the surface is level. Then pour a bag of Geofix (which looks like fine sand) over them, brush it into the cracks left by the deformities of the old bricks and it will set in about 15 minutes (it is air cured). Brush away the excess and you are left with a perfect grout. Geofix can be bought from builder's merchants such as Screwfix, which has trade counters across the UK.
