How to grow and maintain mint

* Plant in well-drained alkaline soil, partial shade or full sun if variegated.

* Grow varieties separately to maintain their unique flavours and fragrances.

* Check vigorous growth and tendency to spread by planting in pots to restrict root spread, or pulling off runners.

* Divide potted plants in autumn to avoid root strangulation and increase stocks.

* Propagate by taking fresh leaf basal cuttings (strong shoots near the base) in spring, place in water and wait for roots to grow before potting up and planting out.
