How to grow fragrant sweet peas
Add colour and perfume to your garden in September
When to plant
Sow in pots in September/ October to plant out in March, or sow directly in March/April for later flowers.
How to plant
Sow five seeds per 12cm pot, water and cover with newspaper. Put in a cold frame or greenhouse and remove the paper once germinated. From March, plant out 20cm apart with canes or netting for them to climb. To sow directly into beds, choose a sunny spot and sow seeds 5cm deep and 10cm apart.
What varieties
The pink and white petals found on the Sunset variety won this sweet pea a prestigious Award of Garden Merit from the RHS. For plentiful flowers in a deep red shade try the Lovejoy variety and for a strong perfume the Blue Danube is an all round favourite thanks to its extra-large, ruffled blue-purple blooms.
