How to plan the perfect wardrobe
Follow our quick and easy tips to turn your cupboard into a well-organised space
Clear out clutter
Start by clearing out clothes you haven't worn in the last year. You need space for your wardrobe to change with the seasons - but you don't have to be too ruthless! Visit www.recyclethis.co.uk for unusual ideas to transform unwanted clothing and shoes. Take clean, serviceable clothes to the charity shop - and don't forget the kids' dressing up box!
Get handy shoe boxes
Use hard-to-reach high shelves for unseasonal shoes, kept in boxes. Wipe shoes clean before stuffing with tissue paper. Line short boots with cardboard cuffs, and lay knee-length boots flat.
Opt for directional lighting
Directional lights above the wardrobe will help you find things - and not forget those stored at the back.
Choose the right hangers
Linen and cotton clothes can go on wooden or plastic hangers, while silk or satins are best on padded hangers that will be softer on the delicate fabric. Skirts should be hung from pegged hangers - with felt pads on the pegs to prevent marks.
Sort your accessories
Keep scarves, belts and gloves in drawers with internal dividers, with gym kit, beach and nightwear folded in storage boxes.
Care for posh frocks
Full-length evening dresses are best stored folded as the weight from beading and sequins can distort shoulders or stretch straps if hung.
