How to put up a shelf
Follow these simple tips to putting up a shelf effectively
Before you start:
- Choose the shelving material you would like to use, such as MDF, chipboard, glass or metal
- Consider what you will be storing on the shelf and if the wall is strong enough to support it
- Select the right bracket and fixings
What tools will you need:
- Electric drill
- Spirit level
- Screwdriver
- Tape measure
- Appropriate screws and wallplugs
Step 1
Hold the bracket to the wall and mark the position of the hole
Step 2
Drill a hole into your mark
Step 3
Screw the bracket to the wall, not too tightly, but enough to hold it in place
Step 4
Hold another bracket in position and place the shelf on top of the two brackets
Step 5
Use a spirit level to check the shelf is straight, and move the second bracket until the bubble is in the centre of the spirit level
Step 6
Mark the hole in the second bracket and drill into your mark
Step 7
Place the shelf onto and check it's level, then screw the brackets tight
Step 8
Finally, screw the shelf to the brackets to keep it in place
