How to spruce up your lawn

Get your grass looking lush and green, ready for summer

Check for damaged areas Remove any debris with a spring-tined rake, £6.99 from Wyevale. If your lawn has concentrated areas of moss, use a hand fork to disturb the patch and allow air to reach the grass roots.

Mend bare patches Fork the area, apply compost and sprinkle over grass seeds – try All Weather Lawn, £4.99 for 250g, Wyevale. Rake and walk over the area, add more compost and water and cover with polystyrene to deter bird

Maintain the look Use a fertiliser such as Scotts Lawn Builder Lawn food, £9 for 3.5kg from The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company, to help your lawn survive drought and disease

Mow regularly Ideally, mow once or twice a week, taking no more than a quarter of the length of the grass off at a time. Trim lawn edges when the grass is wet.
