Whether you're choosing fabric for cushions, curtains or re-upholstery, our jargon buster should help you find the right type.

Man-made fabrics

* Nylon is usually blended with other fibers to make it one of the strongest upholstery fabrics. It doesn't readily mark or wrinkle, but it does tend to fade.

* Polyester is a very strong, durable material and is easy to care for making it ideal for children's furniture.

* Rayon has a soft texture and is an alternative to silk, linen and cotton. It's durable, but can be prone to wrinkling. Recent advances have made high-quality rayon very practical for upholstery.
