On a grand scale

article : On a grand scale

Large scale patterned bedroom.

Archive paisleys, florals and damasks, re-worked to an impressive size and coloured with shimmering metallics and smart monochromes, bring larger-than-life style to interiors.

HOW TO MAKE IT WORK

•Careful positioning of a large-scale pattern over a small area will maximise impact.

•Exaggerate the scale of a print by juxtaposing it with much smaller decorative accessories to create a striking still-life vignette.

•Intense pattern can be lifted with the addition of a diaphanous fabric.

•Large-scale botanical designs work best as curtains if the motifs are loose and flowing.

•Flat surfaces will always show an over-sized design to its best advantage, so avoid using it on fussy, button-backed furniture.

•Carrying a design through from the walls to soft furnishings creates an intimate feel.

•Use large graphic motifs as works of art in their own right by framing them.

•Strong contemporary colours bring traditional damasks up to date
