Pick the right stitch length

Stitch-length settings allow you to cope with different sewing jobs and fabrics.

FINE Ranges from 1mm to 1.5mm. Use for lightweight fabrics like voiles and silks.

REGULAR Ranges from 1.5mm to 2.5mm. It’s the length you should use for cotton fabrics.

TACKING Ranges from 3mm to 5mm. Use this for heavier upholstery fabrics and for gathering your fabric.

NEED-TO-KNOW FABRIC TERMS

SELVEDGE The woven strip that runs along the two side edges of the fabric. It often has useful information such as the fabric name and width printed on it.

GRAIN Fabrics have three types of grain; lengthways (warp),  crossways (weft) and bias (diagonal). Cutting a fabric lengthways keeps its strength, cutting crossways adds a little ‘give’ to your cut piece, while cutting the fabric on the bias gives the most stretch and flexibility to the cut piece, but it loses strength.
