Christmas entertaining made easy

Whether Aunt Sally's staying all week or you're throwing a party for fifty, we've got the hints and tips to make looking after your guests go without a hitch

Staggering your guests' arrival

If you’re determined to throw a big bash with all your friends and family, it’s a good idea to have an open-house party during the day and stagger the start times on the invitations – that way you won’t be mobbed by everyone at 8pm on the dot.

By staggering the arrivals you can cater to the time of day. Perhaps serve cold ham and boiled potatoes for lunch, a buffet of party nibbles during the afternoon and then big bowls of warming soup and crusty bread for late arrivals.
