How to choose a rug

Use our top tips to find the right rug for you.

Think about its location

* If you're wanting a rug for a hallway then choose a hardwearing material that will cope with the busy traffic area. Coir or seagrass is ideal. Go for a dark colour or patterned rug which won't show up marks as easily as a light coloured rug.

* If the rug is for the living room, make sure you choose a design or colour that works with the rest of the scheme. A bright rug will create a focal point, and a neutral rug will blend into the surroundings. Generally, living room rugs should be the length of the sofa to create a balanced look.

* Bedrooms will benefit from deep pile rugs to add a warm and cosy feel.

* When choosing a rug to fit under a dining table, choose one which is slightly larger than the table so all the legs sit level.
