Tide of change

Keen sailors Gay and Colin Kaye demolished a bungalow beside Bosham Creek in West Sussex and created their dream home on its footprint

A love of sailing was the impetus behind Gay and Colin Kaye’s wish to find a home by the sea for themselves and their two children. In 1991, they discovered a south-facing house with views over a peaceful creek, a mile outside Bosham village in West Sussex. The location was perfect, even if the 1960s bungalow with its 1970s extension was not. The couple considered refurbishing their home, but both had busy jobs and the years went by. Eventually, in 2005, having been advised against renovation, the Kayes took the bold step to demolish the house and start again.

The result is a triumph: a spacious family home that is flooded with light all year round. As Gay works part-time for a London estate agent, she and Colin divide their time between their city flat and Bosham, so they needed a house that was easy to look after.
