• Tomato seeds need a temperature of 16°C (60°F) to germinate, so sow in a greenhouse or on a warm windowsill.
• Pot on when you see three or four leaves, and plant out after frosts have passed.
• Alternatively, you can buy plugs or plants. They should be planted in well-drained but moist soil with some organic matter.
• Tomato bushes should be spaced 60cm apart, cordons 45cm apart and both should be watered and fed regularly with a liquid fertiliser.
• Pinch out side shoots and growing tips to encourage bushiness.
