Trailing blooms

Take a wallpaper with a bold teal and parchment pattern as the starting point for a striking, contemporary scheme. Mix ivory and cream finishes with pure white for a warmer look and keep the details unfussy.

Decorator's tip - Use versatile cube furniture

Cube stools are the ultimate multitasking buys. Get the most from your cubes and make your space work harder by using them in three ways ...

1) Put your feet up! Position them in front of the sofa as footstools - one per seat, so two will work for a small sofa, and three will look more in proportion for a larger one.
2) In a larger room, push four cubes together to form a square between sofas. Leave a gap of at least 45cm between the cube group and each sofa. It will be a great focal point for your room and cubes can easily be grabbed to use as occasional seating or side tables.
3) Transform a cube into a table with a custom-made tray. To do this, measure the top of your cube and cut a piece of 5mm MDF to size. Then cut four 4cm-wide strips to the length of your cube. If you don't want to do this yourself, Homebase offers a board-cutting service at most stores when you buy MDF. Use UniBond No More Nails Adhesive, £3.99, Homebase, to stick the sides to the base, leave to dry, then paint.
