Weekend garden projects for September

Get started on those small jobs and you'll see a big difference

IF YOU HAVE 20 MINUTES...
Tidy your window boxes. Take the plants out when they've done their thing and start afresh, bringing in new soil and plants. If you have space in your garden, perennial plants can be given a home elsewhere after flowering.

IF YOU HAVE AN HOUR...
Leaf mould is nature's best seed compost. Gather your leaves and put them into a labelled bin bag. Puncture some holes, then tie the bag at the neck and let them rot down for a year or so.

IF YOU HAVE AN AFTERNOON...
Harvest your own seeds, taking care to catch them before they fall to the ground. If you can, take the seed head off and dry it inside. Hang the stem upside down over a bucket and the aperture will slowly open to release the seeds.
