One of the real pluses of the mix and match approach is the freedom it offers to experiment with daring shades.
For example, you may adore rich ruby, but an entire kitchen in red could prove hard to bear, whereas injecting a small splash of bright colour will create a striking focal point.
Of course getting the balance right is important. Designers recommend restricting really strong shades to around 20% of the overall décor, including any fabrics and soft furnishings.
It’s also good to mix different textures as well as colours – for example brushed nickel taps, distressed paint finishes and rustic mosaic tiles all offer tactile interest.
