Find fitted storage to maximise on space

Fitted furniture is a great way of providing maximum storage in a limited space, with everything hidden away behind a run of doors. It's ideal for awkward nooks and crannies or rooms with sloping ceilings, and is a great way of disguising any not-so-nice features such as unsightly pipework.

Find a specialist company
They will often send a designer to your home to assess your needs and produce drawings. The more information they have, the better the design will be, so think about your needs, likes and dislikes and be honest - especially if you're untidy!

Think about interior fittings
You're not restricted by the limitations of a regular wardrobe, so tailor the layout to suit what you'll be putting in it. It might be worth ditching a standard hanging rail if you don't have many coats or long dresses to hang up and opting for two rails, which will give you twice the storage capacity, instead.

Exploit the height and width of your room
A run of floor-to-ceiling cupboards will give valuable extra inches of storage space and ceiling-height cupboards will make a room appear taller, too.

Make use of every inch inside, too

Fill any shallower spaces - for instance, if you've built around a chimney breast - by fitting shoe racks, hooks or shallow shelves for storing bags and accessories.

Opt for sliding doors
Go for sliding doors rather than an outward-opening design if space is limited. Mirrored doors help to reflect light and create an illusion of space in smaller rooms.

Go for adjustable shelves
Shelving built at different heights will offer you the most flexible storage. Or consider modular furniture with a combination of cupboards, drawers and open shelving that you can add to as your wardrobe expands.

Put dead space to good use
A cupboard over a run of low-level storage, or a bridging cupboard between wardrobes either side of a bed, uses empty wall space and is the perfect place to store out-of-season clothes or bulky items that are only used occasionally.
