From old mattresses to computers, find out how you can get rid of bulky household goods without harming the environment

How to recycle computers

PCs and computer components can have up to 2kg of lead and will cause dangerous pollution if buried in a landfill so it is important to dispose of them properly.

Remove personal data
Any personal information on the hard drive could be used for identity fraud so it is important to wipe the hard drive with special software. Try Drive Erase Pro for the PC, £29.99 from Amazon.co.uk or you can download some programs for free from the internet. Eraser, KillDisk and Mutilate File Wiper are examples of popular programs.

Return it to the manufacturer
Some computer companies are willing to take your old computers when you upgrade to a new one. Try HP, Toshiba or Gateway for more information.

Reuse
Ask around! Someone you know may want your old computer or try local schools. If the computer is less than four years old you can donate it to charity. If your computer is broken, The British Connection will collect your old equipment for free, refurbish the machine and send it back into the community. You can also donate it to charity at www.itforcharities.co.uk or www.donateapc.org.uk.

Professional disposal
There are some professional waste disposal facilities in the UK where the computer will be stripped down and recycled properly, but there can sometimes be a small charge. For more information see the Recycle Now website.

Inkjet cartridges
Raise money for local schools by recycling your old printer cartridges at www.moneytoschools.com
