How to build a house

Construction

Step 1) The first step in construction is laying the foundations. The site will need temporary power and a clean water supply. Be sure to book builders and cranes well in advance.

Step 2) Concrete foundations are poured. Building Control may give you a list of inspection stages, especially for the excavation stage.

Step 3) Framing is the next part of the process. Floors are framed first and then the walls. These are constructed as quickly as possible to keep the site water-proof.

Step 4) Plumbing and electrics need to be complete so that plasterers can finish off the walls. Hard flooring is installed when plastering is finished.

Step 5) Insulation is a huge step in the building process as it can save you money on energy bills. This step requires the exterior wall cavities to be filled with whatever type of insulation you specify.

Step 6) Install kitchen appliances, door fittings, bathrooms and showers. Once these are fitted, you can begin tiling, painting and decorating.

Step 7) Landscaping your garden and driveway will be last on your list, whether it's laying patio, turf or decking.
