Before you start building, decide if you are going to manage the project yourself or hire a professional.
Remember, it is often easier to make objective decisions when you are not intrinsically involved in the building process.
• Draw up a written contract with your builders. This should include details of their guarantee, insurance, payment schedules, and other importance issues. Make sure you keep several copies of the contract for your own reference and subsequent purchasers.
• Read through the ABC of Building Regulations to ensure you are abiding by government standards.
• During construction, keep an eye on safety issues, keep up to date with bills, and keep a tight schedule. You'll also need to provide clear access for your builders and delivery vehicles.
