Choosing the location of your self-build is hugely important. There are many practicalities to consider, including planning permission, architectural heritage and building costs.
Always do your research - talk to estate agents, check out advertisements in the local newspaper and decide whether you need a professional valuation and/or survey.
Questions to consider:
• Is location more important than design?
• Do you have a clear view of your dream property? Does it include certain features e.g parking, a swimming pool?
Remember, you will need planning permission, so consider the surrounding environment. Would your design fit in with the other houses? Would your neighbours approve?
It's also good to think ahead: if you are buying a plot of land in the middle of the countryside, the landowner may sell more in the future, which could affect your surroundings.
