How to grow tomatoes

Everything you need to know about growing versatile tomatoes

Native to South America, the tomato was first domesticated by the Aztecs of Central Mexico, who were growing a little yellow fruit at the time of the Spanish invasion by Cortéz in 1519-21.

There are now around 7,500 varieties of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), which are close cousins of the tobacco plant, potatoes, aubergines and chilli peppers.

In recent years, heritage varieties have become increasingly popular, particularly among home gardeners and organic growers since they tend to produce more interesting and flavourful crops.

Botanically, a tomato is the fruit of a flowering plant or, more precisely, a berry. However, the tomato is not as sweet as some fruits so is often mistaken for a vegetable.
