Groundwork every self-made interior designer must do
Compiling a master list of essential information is a vital first step that will form the basis for your final decorating scheme. You'll need to know:
(1) The dimensions of the room
Measure the depth and length of walls, the length and width of all floors and calculate their square area; plot the dimensions and positions of features like windows, doors, fireplaces and radiators. Double-check all measurements, and plot on graph paper for a precise plan.
(2) Where the light comes from
Is the room north or south-facing and where are the windows.
(3) Which features you can or can't change
For instance, radiators.
(4) Quantities of materials
For example, calculate area of walls, woodwork, floor to estimate how much paint/paper/flooring you will need and should budget for.
(5) A realistic time frame for completing the job
Don't plan a kitchen renovation four weeks before Christmas.
