How to choose artwork
Our insiders' guide to buying artwork gives you advice from the experts on how to create a unique look.
Auctions
Traditional auction houses like Sotheby's or Christie's also deal in contemporary art. Subscribe to their catalogues or browse online. Mark Poltimore, Sotheby's auctioneer and Antiques Roadshow art expert, says: 'Large auction houses will only be selling work by established artists. But don't be afraid, as a lot of it is under £1,000.'
Local auctions can be riskier; you could pick up a bargain, or end up with a mistake. Do your research, stick to a budget, but buy the best you can afford - it's better to buy one piece at £500 than five at £100.
