1) Buy when it's cheaper. You don't have to wait for the sales to get a good deal. BOGOFs, three for the price of two, 15%-off weekends - offers always seem to be on the table at DIY stores, so plan your purchasing.

2) Don't be a label snob. Own-brand DIY products are often the same as their branded buddies, but cheaper. If you've set your heart on a particular posh paint colour, obviously only that will do, but shop around first for tools, fittings and materials. There can be a big difference in the price at rival stores.
