Make Fireworks Night go with a bang

As Bonfire Night approaches, we share our top tips to make it a night to remember.

Plan your display

We all want a little bit more than just sparklers on the night, but it takes preparation and a bit of creativity. Ken Fitfield from Phoenix fireworks says 'start with a volley of rockets to kick things off then use bright cones, candles and cakes to build the excitement before firing the biggest, loudest rockets at the finale'.

Keep Safe

Before you begin your display, set out your garden into three zones - firing, viewing (always make sure your audience is as far away as possible) and landing. Rockets have to land somewhere, so have a look on the rocket packets to check what size of garden they are suitable for. Otherwise, check with your neighbours if they are happy about a few burnt out rockets coming over the fence. Only buy fireworks that comply with British standards BSS 7114 and stick to the fireworks code on the box.

Build the bonfire

It wouldn't be a bonfire night without the bonfire, but make sure you site it well away from buildings and hedges, and never leave it unattended. Always light the bonfire after the fireworks so there is no risk of sparks or heat from the fire setting the fireworks off.

Know the rules

Regulations prohibit adult fireworks being used between 11.00pm and 7.00am throughout the year. There are different arrangements for special occasions like Guy Fawkes' Night (midnight), Diwali, New Year's Eve and Chinese New Year (1am).

It is an offence for people under 18years to have or use adult fireworks in a public place. Adult fireworks are any firework except for a cap, cracker snap, novelty match, party popper, serpent, sparkler or throw down. It is also an offence to throw fireworks in the street. If found guilty, offenders could be liable to a fine of up to £5,000.

Information about firework regulations can be obtained from the Thames Valley Police website.
