Ikea has updated their classic wing-back chair

The 2013 catalogue from Ikea was launched in July and we're really excited about some of the new furniture ranges hitting the stores this Autumn.

When it comes to traditional styles, the wing back design has been a major high-street trend this year, seen everywhere from armchairs and sofas to wing back beds. Putting a modern spin on the classic shape, Ikea has come up with this new Strandmon armchair, featuring tall curved arms and buttoned upholstery.

Its design is based on an original Ikea MK armchair that was sold during the Fifties and appeared on the 1951 Ikea catalogue cover. To show how little - and how much - has changed over the intervening 61 years, the MK is featured on the 2013 catalogue cover, too.

However, the Strandmon's contemporary fabrics and button-upholstered details demonstrate how even classic designs can get a contemporary makeover. Available in either the smart Svanby Grey fabric shown here or in a plush Vellinge Blue, the Strandmon is priced at £175. There's also a matching footstool to complete the look.
