I used to see fuchsias all the time when I was a child but not so much now. Is this because they are difficult to grow or are they just no longer in fashion?
Fuchsias may not be the plant of the moment among designers and the gardening media, but they are still bestsellers. They are easy to grow but many are also tender and need winter protection. Fuchsia ‘Hawkshead' (pictured), £6.99 for three jumbo plugs from Thompson & Morgan, is a hardy plant that can survive outside in a sheltered position. Watch out, however, for fuchsia gall mite, which infests shoot tips and flower buds. Visit the RHS website for advice on what to do if your plants are affected.
