If you have 20 minutes...

Plant bulbs for spring: 'My favourites include the deep purple tulip Queen of Night and soft blue Camassia leichtlinii. Plant bulbs in large groups for maximum impact.'

If you have 60 minutes...

Protect tender plants: 'Tree ferns will need to be wrapped in fleece and all tender species will benefit from the dead growth being left on to form a layer of protection against frosts. Dig up dahlias and cannas, dry and store for next year.'

If you have an afternoon...

Divide your perennials: 'Dig up overcrowded herbaceous perennials and insert two garden forks back to back where you want to divide them. Pull the forks apart to split the plants with minimal damage to the root system. The divided plant will have renewed vigour now that it has more space and you can redesign your borders before next year.'
