It's best not to get too carried away with the idea of a dedicated nursery, as before you know it, your child – and you – will grow out of the themed teddy wallpaper and curtains, and changes can be costly.
HOW TO MAKE IT WORK
•If starting from scratch, the first and most expensive item to consider is furniture, namely a cot/bed, wardrobe and chest of drawers. The wardrobe and drawers can last at least until the child's early teens and the cot/bed should last until the child is around four. Choose these items in a neutral shade and classic style, which will suit any colour scheme.
•The same rule applies for curtains, which are best blackout-lined for summer evenings. Choose a good-quality carpet; a light colour is fine if you keep on top of any spills and introduce a rug for protection and decoration.
•Paint is relatively cheap and you can use it to indulge your creativity, while pictures, toys and mobiles add colour and fun.
