Loading and unloading the dishwasher - or, more accurately, failing to do so - has caused many a household scrap since the machine was first invented in 1924. But a bizarre new use for this unassuming everyday gadget will have family members and flat mates falling over one another to open the dishwasher door first.

The culprit behind this kitchen chaos: dishwasher vodka.

Sounds revolting, right? Not according to the hordes of cocktail enthusiasts who have discovered the recipe online. And it's incredibly easy to make - all you need is a bottle of vodka and your favourite sweets. Oh, and a dishwasher, of course.

Chocolate, Jelly Babies, Pear Drops, Skittles, liquorice - all these and more can be used to whip up a delicious sweetie-vodka concoction.

Just shove your sweets into a third-empty bottle of vodka (a cheapo brand is fine), give the bottle a shake, wrap it in cling film to stop any leakage, then pop it in your dishwasher and hit ‘start'.

The heat produced during the dishwasher cycle on the hottest setting is just enough to combine the sweets and the vodka without losing any of the flavour or alcohol.

Once the cycle's finished, give the bottle another shake, let the mixture cool down for a bit, then sieve out any remaining clumps of sweets with a tea strainer.

And voila! A scrumptious sweetie-flavoured vodka is yours to consume either frozen or chilled.

We've yet to discover whether you can wash your dishes at the same time as mixing your cocktail, but we reckon it's got to be worth a try!
