Juicy Salif lemon squeezer by Philippe Starck
More alien invader than kitchen utensil, the Juicy Salif was designed in 1990 and was one of the first of Philippe Starck's many projects for Alessi. Not that it's what Alessi asked for? The original commission was for a stainless-steel tray.
The story goes that the renegade Starck was eating a plate of squid and squeezing lemon over it; he doodled a few shapes on a napkin and sent it to the Alessi designers who, fortunately, had the vision to go with it.
The result is a beautiful statement piece that commentators agree marked a shift away from back-to-basics Modernism towards more fanciful design, and achieved the seemingly impossible feat of giving the humble lemon squeezer a place in design history.
