Scotland's capital is probably best known for the annual Fringe Festival, when half a million tourists flock to see the best new comedy, theatre, films and music. But after the giggling hordes have departed, Edinburgh is the perfect home for city lovers.

In terms of sheer architectural beauty it has more listed buildings per square metre than Hogwarts, which, incidentally, was dreamed up in one of Edinburgh's many cosy cafes by one of the city's most famous residents, JK Rowling.
