Embassy cutlery by David Mellor

The British ambassador's receptions are noted in society for their host's exquisite taste ? in super-slick stainless-steel cutlery, that is.

Designed specifically for the British embassies in 1963, the year Beatlemania took the globe by storm, David Mellor's minimal Embassy range has the same timeless appeal as the Fab Four.

Like much of his work, which took in everything from the British traffic-light system to tableware, this range fulfilled its designer's aim to make every aspect of daily life as functional and aesthetically pleasing as possible.

His death earlier this year was a great loss to the British design world, but his beautiful pieces have a longevity that will ensure his legacy lives on.
