Buyer's guide to toasters
Before you buy...
LOOK FOR WAYS TO CONTROL YOUR TOASTING Even the most basic toaster will feature a cancel button and a dial to select the browning level, but the higher the number of levels offered, the more precise you can be about the shade of your toast. Defrost and reheat functions are handy for toasting your bread from frozen, or warming up cold toast without burning it. Finally, a warning bell that tells you when your toast is done is great if you never seem to notice it popping out from the toaster, yet like your butter to melt into the bread while it’s hot.
CHECK IT ISN’T JUST SET UP FOR BREAD If you’re partial to a chunky crumpet, look for a toaster with wide slots. A few models have variable slots that you can adjust depending on what you’re browning. Toasters with bagel settings will only brown the cut side of the bagel, while warming racks that sit over the top of the toaster are useful for heating up breads, muffins, croissants and other pastries without drying them out.
KEEP IT LOOKING GOOD There are some beautiful toasters out there — read on and we’re sure you’ll agree that De’Longhi’s Brilliante and the kMix from Kenwood are stunners. But if your purchase is driven by looks, make sure your toaster has a removable crumb tray to make the job of cleaning out those breadcrumbs far easier. Oh, and a matching kettle is just the cup of tea for those who like to coordinate their countertop appliances.
