Painted under bed storage drawers in children's room

Practical ideas for children's storage

Looking for ways to organise your child’s room? We’ve selected our favourite children’s room storage ideas to inspire your next decorating scheme.

Start by choosing great bedroom furniture — look for multi-functional pieces that will save space and money. If storage is built in to classic pieces of furniture, that will minimise the need for extra boxes and accessories.

Children’s wardrobes with a mix of hanging space on one side, and shelving on the other, with drawers beneath, gives a perfect mix of storage in a small space.

If you’re buying for a nursery, opt for a classic painted chest of drawers with a matching changing top — a neutral chest of drawers will work with most decorating schemes as your child grows. Matching furniture, such as bedroom sets with a wardrobe, bed and chest in warm oak, will also stand the test of time.

Raised beds with drawers are a great choice — built-in drawers provide space for bedlinen and out-of-season clothes. Alternatively opt for a blanket box that can double up as a seat.

Next think about adding shelving or a bookcase. A simple solution is to fit a peg rail, a painted wooden shelf with hooks, to display a few favourite toys and hang clothes.

Narrow white shelving, or a corner bookcase, is perfect for awkward spaces, such as small attic rooms and can be tucked into a corner. Make a feature of alcoves with fitted shelves, or a low-level seat for kids with storage boxes underneath.

And if you want to encourage kids to put their toys away? Then make storage look appealing and fun with novelty shelving in dolls’ house or dinosaur designs, or go for pretty painted shelves with a scalloped edge.

For really simple, affordable storage why not sew drawstring bags in candy-stripe fabrics, or personalise plain canvas bags with a monogram, so that kids know which toy bag is theirs.
