Elegant garden party ideas

Entertaining family and friends in the garden is one of the highspots of summer, weather permitting. Where better to create an charasmatic soiree atmostphere for an extra special occassion than out in the open on a pretty patio or garden lawn in amongst the flowers.

A great starting point is to choose a colour scheme. We've opted for white here which looks so smart in the garden and is easy to theme. Crisp white linen and toile cloths get your table setting off to a perfect start. Add elegant white china and bundles of ivory handled cutlery to echo the theme, and of course white flowers are so elegant, transforming your alfresco entertaining space into something special.

Tie blooms into unstructured bunches with white ribbon and your guests will have a ready-made gift to take home with them at the end of the evening. Choose white paper decorations such as pompoms and flowers to string up in forgotten corners. It's a great idea to create different areas for guests to socialise.

A drinks table with a good supply of cocktail glasses, shakers and coolers is a must, so you don't run out of anything and can keep your guests' needs catered for. When it comes to seating, transform garden benches by instantly smartening them up with elegant cushions.

Add a personal touch with handmade invitations to your garden party, then add place cards too on the day. As the light starts to fade, you will need to think about lighting to create the right ambience. Tealights always look pretty as dusk falls, while fairy lights will add some magical sparkle and create the right mood to carry on the party.

Create a dedicated serving table
Create a focal point for pre- or after-dinner drinks with a dedicated serving table for glasses and nibbles. Keep the area cool and covered with a simple voile panel canopy.

Find platinum martini glasses and cocktail shakers at Brissi and smart wine coolers from Lisbeth Dahl. We used Bassano Apple sheer linen from Designer’s Guild for the canopy.
