Best for… a Highland fling with lashings of style.
Why? Former Vogue fashion editor and stylist Isabella Cawdor is now Lady of the manor, and the six cottages available to rent on the Cawdor estate were restyled by her with a simple, contemporary country feel.
Where? In the Highlands, east of Inervness, the estate spans 20 miles north to south. The cottages are dotted around, surrounded by fields and woodland, but within a few miles of Cawdor village and the coast.
Staying in: If it's pouring down outside, cosy up in front of a log fire with a glass of local whisky. Views over the Moray Firth, the River Findhorn or the distant hills help soothe away your cares. Spa treatments are available in the cottages, including shiatsu and aromatherapy. When you book, you'll receive a list of local suppliers and farm shops selling wild game, gourmet cheeses and deli products – everything for a fabulous dinner. For organic food, try Highland Wholefoods in Inverness and Mcleod Organics in Ardersier.
Style steal: A tartan throw on a white duvet adds a touch of clan cool. Take a look at the selection at ANTA.
Going out: Pull on your walking boots and stride out into the wild scenery. Accompanied walks from two to eight hours can be booked. If you like riding, Heatherfield Stables in Nairn will take you for a gallop on the beach. You can shoot, too, either clay pigeons or game birds in season, or fish in the lochs or rivers. Too Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall-ish? Wander the gorgeous beaches at Lossiemouth and and Culbin Sands instead, then pick up some cashmere or tweed in Mairn's boutiques. Cromarty is also worth a visit if antiques are your thing. If it's whisky you're after, head to the Glenlivet distillery, then end the day in the local Cawdor tavern. Warm up around its roaring fire and tuck into the hearty food served nightly, before walking home by torch light.
More info From £270 for three days in Rose and Achneim cottages, which both sleep two. To book, call 01667 402402 or visit www.cawdor.com.
