Best for… a bit of Gypsy Rose Lee romance.
Why? It's a green, best-of-both-worlds holiday for two. You sleep in a Romany caravan, snuggled up under a goose-down duvet, but you cook, wash and hang out in the cabin alongside it, where the 'luxuries' include a power shower. All the romance of Romany life without the privations.
Staying in: The bow-top caravan is decorated in the reds and pinks loved by the Romanies, with a comfy double bed and an original queenie stove. The newly built cabin next door has a kitchen, bathroom and living area. If it rains (well, this is Wales), there's a little French shepherd's stove to keep you warm, as well as a CD player and games to keep you entertained. In the evenings, light the barbecue and sit on the verandah, watching the sun slip behind the hills. Tucked at the end of a half-mile track, city life feels a long way away.
Style steal: You might not want the full Romany works in your bedroom, but remind yourself of the caravan's interior with a plush velvet cushion in crimson. Try House of Fraser or Habitat.
Going out: There are fantastic restaurants and pubs nearby, including the celebrated Walnut Tree Inn, serving Italian food, and The Bell At Skenfrith pub, famous for local fare and Michelin Pub of the Year 2007. Abergavenny has all the facilities you'd expect from a town – pick up fresh fish and local cheeses at Vin Sullivan. To burn the calories, hit the Offa's Dyke trail, which passes along the border with England, or go mountain biking, pony trekking, kayaking or climbing in the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains.
More info From £290 a week. Short breaks are also available. Call 01874 676446 or visit Brecon Beacon Holiday Cottages at www.breconcottages.com.
