Vintage Vacations, Newport, Isle of Wight

article : Vintage Vacations, Newport, Isle of Wight

Best for… a little bit of retro R&R in rural England.

Why? Staying in a vintage American trailer has proved so popular that owners Helen and Frazer have imported three more from the US, bringing the total to five – the oldest being a 1951 Spartanette, the 'Cadillac'' of trailers. All have been restored and kitted out with authentic furnishings, from the crazy-patterned curtains to the Formica-topped tables. But it's not style over comfort; there's hot water, showers, heating, the original ranges work a treat and there are modern extras like CD players.

Where? In a field on a working dairy farm on the Isle of Wight. The site is surrounded by rolling fields. 10 minutes from Newport.

Staying in: All the trailers sleep four, with a mix of pull-out 'gaucho' beds and static doubles. As with any caravan, the space is compact, so come with close mates or family. The look is retro, and so is the entertainment. On drizzly days, forget TV and PlayStation and raid the cupboards for original games from the Fifties and Sixties (think Tiddly Winks and Beetle Drive, all picked up on eBay here and in the US), flick through a back issue of Woman or put on a CD – each trailer has the hits from the year it was made.

Style steal: If you draw the line at a crocheted bedspread, settle instead for a cushion cover. Try Ditton Hill for luxurious, modern versions.

Going out: The island is a mix of the kitsch and the cool. Where else do you find gnome gardens and quintessentially English beaches, like Steephill Cove, rubbing shoulders with rock festivals and a thriving arts scene? There are tons of environmentally low-impact activities to enjoy, from surfing at Compton Bay and cycling, to climbing ancient oak trees at Goodleaf Tree Climbing Adventures. For healthy local produce, Godshill Organics is about 10 minutes from the site and The Garlic Farm specialises in, well, garlic.
